Nuclear weapons are secure, a top Pakistani official says

We are conscious of this threat," the official said. "As military, we should be prepared for worst contingencies."

However, the official said a successful terrorist attack on nuclear installations was a practical impossibility. "It will be pre-empted through intelligence or we will be able to minimize the damage," the official said.

The official said there were only three imaginable scenarios through which extremists could gain control of the country's nuclear weapons:

The extremists could gain control of the government through democratic elections. "Not possible," he said, adding that all major political parties were "moderate and middle of the road."

A violent revolution could occur. "It is an exaggerated fear," he said, vehemently discounting the possibility.

DRM usage laws needed, MPs told

The National Consumer Council (NCC) has told MPs that companies are threatening civil liberties through their use of digital rights management (DRM) and has called for legislation to regulate its use.

In a submission to the All Party Parliamentary Internet Group (Apig), which has launched an investigation into DRM, the NCC claimed DRM is already constraining legitimate consumer use of digital content and undermining consumers existing rights under consumer protection and data protection laws.

In particular, the NCC cited Sony's controversial use of rootkit-like software on some music CDs as evidence that self-regulation isn't working.

Jill Johnstone, director of policy at the NCC, said in a statement: "Because of the current situation, consumers face security risks to their equipment, limitations on their use of products, poor information when purchasing products and unfair contract terms."

She added: "Whilst we recognise the value of intellectual-property rights, we have little confidence in self-regulation by the industry.

Rell backs McCain in GOP presidential race

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) _ Arizona Sen. John McCain won the endorsement of Connecticut top Republican on Monday in his campaign for the Republican presidential nomination.

Gov. M. Jodi Rell called McCain a longtime friend who would be the most effective leader to grapple with national security, the economy, energy, the environment and trade policy.

"I can think of no one I would rather see leading our nation," she said in a statement.
