Tech Tips: The ABDs of maintaining your PC
This edition of Tech Tips is aimed at helping everyone perform some basic and important routine maintenance. "A" is for anti-virus. Who got a new computer last year for Christmas? If you did, then it's likely the one-year antivirus subscription has expired or is close to expiring. Don't let the presence of the little icon (whether Norton, McAfee or otherwise) give you a false sense of security that you're protected. Even though some programs have pop-up reminders about subscription renewal, it's surprising how many people let their coverage lapse. Double-click that icon and check your status. When was the last update? When was the last scan? Are you protected from more than just viruses? Other types of malware can include rootkits and spyware. A good protection package should address all three.
Netintelligence and XMA Sign Deal to Protect Government-issued ...
Laptops given to school children under the Governments Computers for Pupils scheme will include advanced software to protect them online following a deal between Netintelligence and IT supplier XMA Ltd. Ni Enterprise Manager, a software as a service developed by internet security firm Netintelligence, provides anti-virus, anti-spyware, web filtering and instant messaging monitoring features and will be installed on computers distributed by XMA under the scheme when requested by local authorities. The service, which was recently awarded the CSIA Claims Tested (CCT) mark, uses the internet to centrally monitor policy compliance and deliver protection across de-perimeterised boundaries and networks. The software ensures children can surf the web safely while completing schoolwork, protected from viruses, inappropriate content and online predators.
